NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, November 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- ArtMattan Films, the New York-based distributor specializing in cinema from Africa and the African Diaspora, announces the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to The Ghost of Hing King Estate, the final feature film by Sir Horace Ové (1936–2023), the pioneering Trinidadian-British filmmaker whose groundbreaking work helped establish Black British cinema.

Set in Trinidad in 1971 and inspired by actual events, The Ghost of Hing King Estate (2007, Trinidad and Tobago) follows a series of mysterious deaths at the Hing King Estate in Las Cuevas. As fear and suspicion spread, Carmelle, the estate overseer's wife, becomes the target of accusations involving murder and obeah, a Caribbean spiritual practice. Combining mystery and psychological drama, the film explores the destructive consequences of superstition, prejudice and collective judgment.

Written by Francis Escayg and filmed on location in Trinidad, the film features an ensemble cast including Susan Hannays-Abraham, Errol Sitahal, Wendell Manwarren, Cecilia Salazar and Michael Cherrie.

A Landmark Figure in Black Cinema
Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Sir Horace Ové made film history with Pressure (1975), widely recognized as the first feature-length film directed by a Black filmmaker in Britain. Exploring racism, migration and identity through the experiences of a young Black British man, Pressure became a landmark of British cinema and paved the way for subsequent generations of Black filmmakers.

Throughout his career, Ové brought underrepresented stories to the screen, examining the social and cultural realities of Black communities in Britain and the Caribbean. The Ghost of Hing King Estate, his final feature, represents a return to his Trinidadian roots and an important part of his cinematic legacy.
U.S. Premiere at ADIFF 2026

The Ghost of Hing King Estate will make its U.S. premiere on Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 8:00 PM, at Teachers College, Columbia University, as the gala presentation of the Spotlight on Trinidad and Tobago Cinema at the 34th African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF) in New York.
Acclaimed Trinidadian actor Michael Cherrie, who portrayed Shirley Chisholm's husband opposite Regina King in Netflix's Shirley (2024), will attend in person for a post-screening conversation.

Following its ADIFF premiere, ArtMattan Films plans to bring the film to additional festivals and theatrical venues in 2027, introducing new American audiences to the final work of one of the most influential pioneers of Black cinema.
