Why Actress, Lauren “Lolo” Spencer Deserves an Oscar Nomination?

The Multicultural International Motion Picture Association asks the hard questions to The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences regarding Actress, Lauren “Lolo” Spencer in her breakout role as the first African-American disabled lead female in “Give Me Liberty”, a wild ride, according to several film critics. Not since “Rocky” has a film received so many wonderful reviews. Will Oscar ignore this performance and other small budgeted independent films because, “Oscar’s So Rich”? Is there a place in Hollywood for disabled actors?

If we focus on the fact that this is Actress, Lauren “Lolo” Spencer’s first feature role, there is one thing that cannot be ignored, she delivers on all fronts in “Give Me Liberty”, and captivates the viewer with her abilities with such honesty in her role as Tracy the film’s leading female role, stated MIMPA President, Gail Gibson. Lolo, as she is fondly referred to, plays opposite Actor, Chris Galust, and other cast members who are virtually unknown.

Lauren braved the cold of Milwaukee, Wisconsin against all odds to make it clear that disabled artist exist and have a place in Hollywood. Stricken with ALS at the age of 14, Lauren Spencer has turned her disability into advocacy for the disabled, as she demonstrates on a daily basis her life with this disease, and although wheel-chair bound, watching her YouTube Channel “SittingPrettyLolo” or her Instagram “it’sLoloLove” have both garnered her a following, making her a champion and inspiration in the eyes of thousands of followers, proving that whether we are disabled or not, the one thing that connects us all, is that we are human.

Nominated for her role in “Give Me Liberty” in the Best-Supporting Actress category at the upcoming Film Independent Spirit Awards, where the movie has also garnered nods in three additional categories, Best Actor, Best Editor, and the Cassavetes Award, and she is slated to receive the Trailblazer Award at MIMPA’s 11th Annual Lady in Red Diamond Rose Awards Gala for her advocacy and her role in Give Me Liberty, February 21, 2020 in Beverly Hills.

Described by Manohla Dargis of the New York Times as hilarious, poignant, completely delightfully unpredictable”, it follows medical transport driver Vic, who agrees to deliver his Russian grandfather and émigré friends to a funeral, disrupting scheduled clients, particularly Tracy, a young black woman with ALS, played by Lauren “Lolo” Spencer. Vic’s day goes from hectic to off-the-rails as their collective ride becomes a hilarious, compassionate, intersectional portrait of America, that “celebrates the connective tissue of humanity” and “reaffirms the resilience of the American Dream”.

The ultra-low budget underdog of a film was made with non-professional local cast and shot entirely on location in Milwaukee, America’s most segregated city. “Give Me Liberty” premiered at and opened the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, also the 2019 Cannes Film Festival where it was received with an over 10-minute ovation. The film has been released in a number of countries, including France, where it has been playing to great critical and audience acclaim on 100 screens for five straight weeks.

Manohla Dargis describes, “Give Me Liberty” as “A JOLT OF A MOVIE, AN ANARCHIC DEADPAN COMEDY THAT EVOLVES INTO A ROMANCE JUST AROUND THE TIME THE STORY EXPLODES…. IT’S IRRESISTABLE”, while Variety calls it, “A BOISTEROUS, FREEWHEELING JOYRIDE”. RogerEbert.com hails it as, “ELECTRIC, A FRESH ALL-AMERICAN CROWD-PLEASER” and The Hollywood Reporter praised it as “EXHILARATING! ONE OF THE BEST OF SUNDANCE…. REAFFIRMS THE RESILIANCE OF THE AMERICAN DREAM”. –these are just a few of the worldwide reviews garnered by this incredible cast thus far, which makes it a “MUST SEE”.

The film features and includes a cast with some disabled individuals and stars, one of them being “Lauren “Lolo” Spencer”. RogerEbert.com put “Lauren “Lolo” Spencer on the list of ten best performances at Sundance, calling it “ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE…A SCENE STEALING STRAIGHT WOMAN AGAINST THE CHAOS OF THE OTHER RIDERS ON THE VAN”

Leonard Ross' debut The Present Past combines history, fact, fiction, and adventure in new novel.

Present Past Cover

Deeply influenced by his experience in the military and secrets surrounding his Grandfather’s involvement in the Russian army, Ross drew inspiration from life.

This adventure is more a fanciful story related by a mischievous uncle than an airport thriller—and all the more entertaining for it.”

— Kirkus Reviews

CLEVELAND, OHIO, USA, December 31, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — ATBOSH Media Ltd. an Agency press in Cleveland, Ohio is pleased to announce the release of Leonard Ross' debut novel The Present Past.

Deeply influenced by his experience in the military and secrets surrounding his Grandfather’s involvement in the Russian army, Leonard Ross drew inspiration from life’s adventures.

At 18 he joined the Armed Forces serving in Japan, and later in Turkey as a top secret courier for the United States. From the Navy and Air Force to building his own sailboat and living aboard it in Key West, Leonard was a dreamer who remarkably brought his visions to life. This novel, though fiction, is an elaboration from his life history and the creative imagination of one spirited man.

“This adventure is more a fanciful story related by a mischievous uncle than an airport thriller—and all the more entertaining for it.”
Kirkus Reviews

It’s 1965 and US State Department Officer Josh Ross has been sent to Turkey to settle a dispute between Turkey and Greece. While there his old friend Gabe Smith hands him a letter sent from Russia that starts him on an adventure that takes him around the world. While being pursued by both the Russians and Bulgarians (and helped by Israel’s Mossad) can Josh uncover a family secret that goes all the way back to Czar Peter the Great?

The Present Past was Leonard's first and only novel, he passed away in 2009.

"Publishing this book was purely accidental." says publisher Jared Bendis. "Leonard was my favorite uncle, and after his passing my Aunt Louise mentioned that he had woven together our family history, his adventures in the military, and his love for James Bond into a novel that he didn't show anyone. After reading it, I insisted on publishing it."

ATBOSH Media Ltd. in Cleveland, Ohio is more than just Ross' publisher. As an Agency Press they also serve as the literary agent for both the book and its derivative works including the television and film rights.

"We are a different type of publishing house," says Jared. "Instead of shopping around this book to larger publishing houses, we published the book and will now be shopping it around to larger houses for them to take it to the next level."

Teen from TN Meets Up with Rising Singer in VA To Film EMOTIONAL TERRORIST an Explosive Music Video about Mental Illness

Billy Mercury & Evan Hurst during the filming of Emotional Terrorist

Complete Strangers around the Globe Collaborate to Send a Powerful Message about Mental Illness

VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA, USA, December 30, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — 17 year -old Evan Hurst traveled from Knoxville, Tennessee, to Virginia Beach, VA, for what Hurst called “a life changing experience”. He was welcomed by the professional film crew TCFVA and joined by vocalist Billy Mercury and actress Brittany O’Neill to create the music video EMOTIONAL TERRORIST.

Executive Producer and Lyricist, Amy Havens Selleck, reflects on the crazy way this video came to fruition.
“Evan’s father had shared the teen’s music with me via text. His instrumentals were exemplary. One of his songs wouldn’t leave my head. It stuck. I asked permission to test run some lyrics and the rest is history.’
‘Ironically, the next day, I spoke with a friend who was in an abusive relationship with her bi-polar partner. That same night, I was involved in a heated exchange with a loved one. It hit me that EVERYONE has been on the giving and/or receiving end of mental illness. No one asks for it. No one wants it. Mental illness strikes unannounced like a terrorist in the night.EMOTIONAL TERRORIST was penned from feelings of utter frustration, anger and desperation.”

Evan’s response after first glancing at the lyrics is a testament to the depth of this young man’s spirit. “I now know what I want to do with my music. I want to use my music as a voice to reach more individuals and bring awareness to people and issues that are overlooked or forgotten.”

Cetre Pegues, Director of “Emotional Terrorist” stated that the project literally landed on his lap at the same time he learned about a friend who had been living in “emotional terror”. “When the project received the ‘green light’, I went into research mode. That is how the scissor scene came to be. I had no idea how many people cut themselves until I interviewed a friend.
I had been trying to work with Billy Mercury for a few years but the right one kept missing us. When Amy told me the sound she was looking for, I knew Billy was the perfect match.”

“I wanted someone who could sing raw lyrics with a smile on his face. I guess it was my subliminal message that no matter how bad things can get, you just have to keep going with a smile. Billy was a direct ‘bulls-eye’.”

Billy Mercury’s sound is the epitome of “feel good music.” The multi-faceted rapper/soul singer is known to be the “hidden gem” of the DMV music and Hip-Hop culture.

Recently, Mercury earned his spot on BET’s premiered music competition show, “The Next Big Thing”. Music magazines have likened his sound to such heavy hitters as Jay-Z, Anderson .Paak and the late J Dilla.

“When Cetre first presented the project to me, my first thoughts were, 'I’ll just sing what was written when I get it…' but when I heard the instrumentals, read the lyrics and realized a 17 year- old wrote the music, I was ALL in.”, exclaimed Mercury.

Evan recounts the moment when he first heard Billy singing the song during filming. “I thought to myself, Wow. This was just something I played on my guitar in my room. It’s not just music anymore. We created a MESSAGE. “

During production, it became apparent that all involved had their personal stories of how mental illness has affected their lives.

Lead actress, Brittany O’Neill was forthcoming in admitting that expressing herself through the character of Serenity was a therapeutic process for her own personal struggles. “This project was a humbling reminder that I can still reach those dark places as an actress. I really connected to the extreme ups and downs of this relationship.”

While diving into the research process, Selleck was shocked to learn the amount of people affected by mental illness. “Our society is suffering behind closed doors seemingly as our relationships crumble while the problem continues to grow.
One can clearly witness in our video how Billy and Serenity truly love each other. They are both desperate. They are both hurting. Billy doesn’t understand. Serenity feels hopeless.
These are not uncommon struggles in many of our households today. 80% of marriages end in divorce where addictions, major depression and anxiety are factors.”

Statistics shared by MentalHealth.gov are startling:

• One in five American adults have experienced a mental health issue.
• One in 25 Americans live with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, bi polar disorder or depression.

What were Evan’s final thoughts when asked what impact he hopes EMOTIONAL TERRORIST will have on the general public? “I would love for this song to shed light on the urgency of finding better resources to help those with mental disorders and also to help the loved ones affected living through the terror with them. There is such a negative stigma on this topic but it can’t get better until we can openly talk about it and be honest with ourselves and others.”

Composers for January 12 2020 North South Concert

North South Composers January 12 2020

Max Lifchitz conducts 5 exciting works by American Composers. Soloists include The Janes Vocal Trio, violist Yumi Oshima and accordionist William Schimmel.

The Janes, “a heavily sequined, glorious-voiced singing trio, performed a comic medley….their raucous audience was on their feet cheering.””

— The New York Times

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA, December 30, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — North/South Consonance, Inc. kicks off its 40th consecutive season and celebrates the arrival of the New Year with a free-admission concert on Sunday afternoon January 12, 2020.

The event will feature the GRAMMY nominated North/South Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Max Lifchitz performing five exciting and eminently accessible works by living American composers. Soloists for the occasion will include the vocal trio known as The Janes; violist Yumi Oshima and accordionist William Schimmel.

Featured will be recently completed compositions by Edmund Cionek, Leandro Espinosa, Ethan Resnik, William Schimmel and Davide Tammaro.

The concert will start at 3 PM and end approximately at 4:30 PM. It will be held at the auditorium of Christ and St. Stephen's Church (120 West 69th Street) in Manhattan. The auditorium is ADA accessible. No tickets or reservations needed.

The following compositions will be heard for the first time:

Edmund Cionek's Once Upon a Homicide for three vocalists and string orchestra is a dramatic work tinged with film noir sensibilities. The music of the three-movement work is full of jazz-inspired harmonies and syncopated rhythms. It conjures dystopian soundscapes, obscure nightclubs and even a brutal killing. Written especially for The Janes Trio (vocalists Christine Ranck, Sula Haska, and Patti Wyss) it employs lyrics also penned by Mr. Cionek.

Leandro Espinosa's Nocturno for viola and strings was written at the request of violist Yumi Oshima a close friend of the Mexican American composer. The music highlights the sweetness and profundity of the viola while evoking the sound of the nightly soul.

Ethan Resnik' Blue Moonlight is a neo-impressionistic work that aims to illustrate how a rare blue moon harmonizes with the warmth of the air under the luminous sky as it spreads its blue light. Scored for string ensemble this is the first time a professional ensemble performs a work by this exceptionally talented young composer.

Willam Schimmel's Variations on a Waltz by Pee Wee King for accordion and strings consists of a series of variations on the million-selling classic Tennessee Waltz written by the country music star Pee Wee King. Schimmel's symphonic work captures the light and dark qualities inherent in King's beautiful melody while giving the soloist ample opportunity for technical display. An acclaimed accordionist, the composer himself will appear as the featured soloist for the premiere of this highly stimulating work.

Davide Tammaro's Nautilus was inspired by Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Nautilus is the submarine, which carries the passengers throughout marvelous adventures underneath the oceans. The melodies of this work are often repeated as retrogrades or inversions to connect all elements because at the end, everything belongs to the sea.

Since its inception in 1980, the North/South Consonance, Inc. has brought to the attention of the New York City public over 1,000 works by composers hailing from the Americas and elsewhere representing a wide spectrum of aesthetic views. Its activities are made possible in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs as well as a grant from the Music Performance Fund and the generosity of numerous individual donors.

2020 TOURNAMENT OF ROSES EXPANDS USE OF MERIDIAN® CERTIFIED BARRIERS

Archer 1200 staged at Parade intersection

MERIDIAN barriers to be deployed on Rose Parade route

MERIDIAN® Vehicle Barriers

ARCHER 1200 EMPLOYED TO INCREASE PROTECTION AND REPLACE OLD WATER BARRIER TECHNOLOGY

The MERIDIAN® solution really has the ideal set of specifications. They are fast and easy to deploy, flexible to use and tested to be effective.”

— Lt John Mercado, Pasadena PD Counter-Terrorism Unit

PASADENA, CA, UNITED STATES, December 28, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The 2020 Tournament of Roses Parade will utilize more than 350 certified hostile vehicle mitigation barriers designed and manufactured by MERIDIAN® Rapid Defense Group. Deployed along the length of the 5.5-mile route, MERIDIAN®‘s Archer 1200 drop & stop barrier will replace water barriers and cones to adhere to Department of Homeland Security guidelines.

“It is important that the city is using the very latest technology when it comes to protecting spectators, employees and everyone associated with the parade,” said Lt John Mercado with the Pasadena Police Department Event Planning Section and Counter-Terrorism Unit. “MERIDIAN® barriers are tested and certified to do the job, and we have already seen a positive response from the community seeing them staged on the streets.”

The City of Pasadena passed a measure earlier this year to expand the use of MERIDIAN® barriers for the 2020 Parade as well as up to four additional years. MERIDIAN®‘s Archer® 1200 barrier is certified to both US and European crash test standards and was recently designated under the SAFETY Act as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT). Archer® 1200 barriers were utilized for the 2018 Rose Parade Game and brought in to protect key areas at the stadium and parade route this year.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the City of Pasadena,” said MERIDIAN® CEO Peter Whitford. “There is a clear understanding of the need with an event of this size and stature. The Archer® 1200 was designed exactly for the ability to provide rapidly deployed protection that doesn’t interfere with pedestrian movement. We can have the entire route secured and then re-opened in a very short time and without the need for heavy equipment.”

Planning, deployment and management of the event will be handled by MERIDIAN® Rental Solutions. Placement of the barriers prevents vehicle incursion onto the parade route while allowing for emergency access and the free movement of the estimated one million people who will be lining the streets for viewing.

“The MERIDIAN® solution really has the ideal set of specifications,” said Lt Mercado. “They are fast and easy to deploy, flexible to use and tested to be effective.”

The City of Pasadena filed a report with the City Council that stated no other companies were found that provide a device that meets the QATT qualifications. The MERIDIAN® solution is utilized by police, fire and major league sports venues including NFL, MLB, MLS and NBA stadiums. Archer® 1200 barriers have been in place at multiple Department of Homeland Security designated SEAR (Special Events Assessment Rating) Level 1 events including the Rose Parade and Super Bowl.
