WASHINGTON, May 13, 2015 — The Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington, D.C. is premiering a new look inspired by Hilton’s brand theme for Homewood Suites renovations, ‘Take Flight.’ According to Hilton, the renovations are intended to do more than just make the space look pretty; they are a result of redefining space to meet the needs of how today’s guests travel and want to use the public areas during their stay. At the 175 guest-suite, extended-stay Homewood Suites Washington, D.C., the renovation encompassed the entire first level of the hotel. Guests are now greeted in a lobby with a strategically placed fireplace; modern finishes and furnishings, including ceramic, plank-tile floors; new energy efficient lighting; three new flat screen TVs; seating arrangements that are flexible for working and relaxing, including a signature community “wing” table. In addition, the Home Office business center, flexible meeting space, and the Suite Shop for sundries are all open to the lobby creating a fluid environment for work, relaxation and dining. The color palette is blue and cream with splashes of red, reflecting on the nation’s national colors. And for a bit of whimsy, the artwork is black and white photography of past Presidential dogs.

The 175 one-bedroom suite, extended-stay property is managed by Crestline Hotels & Resorts LLC. It is in the heart of Northwest Washington, D.C. on Massachusetts Avenue and is near the White House, within walking distance to the McPherson Square Metro station, as well as in close proximity to the Smithsonian Institute, the Washington Monument, the National Zoo and other area attractions. Washington D.C. Mayor, Property Group Partners Break Ground on Capitol Crossing

Project will bring 4,000 construction and 8,000 permanent jobs to the District, improve infrastructure

LaToya Foster (EOM) (202) 727-5011; latoya.foster@dc.gov
Joaquin McPeek (DMPED) (202) 727-6698; joaquin.mcpeek@dc.gov

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Property Group Partners to break ground on Capitol Crossing, a $1.3 billion project in Ward 6 that will transform a seven-acre site surrounding the I-395 Center Leg Freeway into a cityscape that will span three blocks and reunite the East End and Capitol Hill communities in the District of Columbia.

“Capitol Crossing represents a major milestone for economic and neighborhood growth in the District of Columbia,” said Mayor Bowser. “I am excited to break ground on a project that will have a positive and lasting impact on our residents, bringing good paying jobs to the District, and helping to create more pathways to the middle class.”

The development of Capitol Crossing is expected to create 4,000 construction jobs and 8,000 permanent jobs, all while dramatically improving the utility infrastructure supporting local neighborhoods. Once completed, annual new property tax revenue of $40 million is expected. Capitol Crossing will deliver almost 70,000 square feet of retail space, over 1,100 parking spaces, and 440 bicycle parking spaces. New I-395 entrance and exit ramps will improve traffic flows and make travel along Massachusetts Avenue safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Infrastructure will be upgraded for the surrounding neighborhoods.

“Residents have never seen anything like the Capitol Crossing construction project, but it will directly benefit District residents,” said Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. “I look to today’s groundbreaking to create new jobs and investment in the District, ending with the transformation of an underutilized public asset into a brand new neighborhood for residents with commercial amenities. I look forward to working closely with the development team and to keeping District residents informed.”

The project will feature state-of-the-art office buildings punctuated by garden promenades in a new “eco-district” that will achieve a “beyond LEED Platinum” certification.

“Mayor Bowser has articulated a forward thinking vision for the city, making innovation, economic development, and greater job opportunities for all District residents a priority,” Deputy Mayor Kenner said. “Creating the first Eco-District in Washington, Capitol Crossing is an innovative and transformative project, proving catalytic growth that will benefit more Washingtonians.”

Property Group Partners’ development of Capitol Crossing is the largest private development currently underway in Washington, DC. Once completed, the development is expected to provide a minimum of 50 affordable housing units at 80% Area Median Income (AMI). During construction, Adas Israel Synagogue will be moved and integrated into the new neighborhood adjacent to a new Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington Museum. The historic Holy Rosary Church will be fully integrated into the new community, and its rectory will be restored to its original position.

“Washington, DC is vibrant and growing. Our team has a long history developing major projects with community support here in our nation’s capital; we are excited to continue this work with Capitol Crossing,” said Bob Braunohler, Regional Vice President of Property Group Partners. “Today, we embark on an ambitious journey together. Capitol Crossing fills in the last missing piece of Washington’s business district, and will bring one-of-a-kind commercial, retail, residential, and public spaces to the heart of the District of Columbia. We look forward to working with Mayor Bowser, Federal Officials, and the community to make our collective vision a reality.”

Utility relocation and site preparation commenced in 2014. Platform construction is expected to begin this coming August. Following construction of the new Massachusetts Avenue ramp to I-395, the 200 Massachusetts Avenue building will be constructed, with delivery expected in 2017. Delivery of the following four buildings and reconnection of F Street and G Street Northwest will follow through 2019.

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser congratulated the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) and its Board of Trustees for their selection of Ronald Mason Jr. as the University’s new President. Dr. Mason previously served as president of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., and Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss. He will lead the District’s only public university which serves more than 5,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, law school and community college programs.

Last night in a letter to the DC Council, Mayor Bowser announced her intention to fully restore funding for UDC in the District’s Fiscal Year 2016 budget.

“I welcome Ronald Mason to the District of Columbia and look forward to collaborating to develop programs and initiatives that will create pathways to the middle class for residents and the entire student body,” said Mayor Bowser. “I congratulate the board of the University of the District of Columbia for selecting a leader with a wealth of experience as they work to transform the District’s public university. We share in the commitment to improve UDC, and that is why we fully funded their budget through the budget process.”

“The Board of Trustees of University of the District of Columbia is extremely pleased to have the acknowledgement of Mayor Muriel Bowser for our selection of Mr. Ronald Mason, Jr. as the next President of the University,” said Dr. Elaine A. Crider, chair of UDC’s Board of Trustees. “We are also sincerely grateful to Mayor Bowser for restoring funding to the University. We look forward to collaborating with Mayor Bowser and her team in strengthening and moving the University to accomplish great things for the residents of the District of Columbia.”

As President, Mason will be tasked with continuing the University’s mission of providing a secondary education while also offering programs that promote workforce development. He will partner with the Bowser Administration as the Mayor continues her efforts to create pathways to the middle class by investing in programming that offers extensive training for good-paying jobs.

Mason was the seventh president of the Southern University and A&M College System, which included a Research University, a Law Center and a community college. During his tenure, he developed a social and academic framework designed to improve college attainment and completion for Black males; established an innovative partnership to create a Southern online degree brand through seven fully online degree programs; and led the expansion of the Shreveport community college onto the four-year campuses in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Mason received his B.A. in History from Columbia University and his J.D. from Columbia School of Law at Columbia University.

Record Number of Domestic Visitors to Washington, DC Spent $6.8 Billion in 2014

(Washington, DC) Leadership from Washington, DC’s hospitality and tourism industry today confirmed that 2014 is the fifth consecutive record-breaking year for domestic visitation at Destination DC’s annual Travel Rally.

In 2014, domestic visitation topped 18.34 million domestic visitors, according to a report prepared by D.K. Shifflet, an increase of 5.7% over 2013. Visitors to DC spent $6.8 billion, according to IHS Global, Inc., a year-over-year increase of 1.9%.

The seventh annual rally, held at the Carnegie Library at Mount Vernon Square was timed to coincide with the U.S. Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week, May 3-11, 2014.

”Every visitor to the District of Columbia plays a vital role in sustaining our local economy by staying in our hotels, dining in our restaurants, visiting our attractions, shopping in our stores and supporting almost 75,000 District jobs,” said Elliott L. Ferguson, president and CEO of Destination DC, the official tourism and marketing office for the District. ”In 2014 visitor spending was up more than $100 million over the previous year. 2014 marks the fourth consecutive year visitor spending surpassed $6 billion. The retail sector grew by 2.5%. Spending on food and beverage was up almost 4% while entertainment spending was up nearly 2% as well, a significant turnaround from recessionary spending when consumers cut back on non-essential costs as necessary.

”Destination DC keeps the District at the forefront of consumers’ minds by spotlighting our world-famous tourism inventory as well as $9 billion of new development underway in our neighborhoods,” said Ferguson. ”Yes, we’re wary of the one-two combo of a falling Euro and strong U.S. dollar abroad, but we’re addressing key audiences in novel ways. This summer, our largest seasonal campaign will contains a creative arsenal including DC-themed emojis; a ”DC Cool” Kids Activity Guide, and our first television commercial, produced in-house, for broadcast in key feeder markets, as well as a #WeGotThis print campaign in popular regional magazines such as Boston Magazine, The New Yorker and New York Magazine. ”

”DC has every reason to celebrate this week because it’s not only one of our country’s top destinations but it also benefits from a civic leadership that knows how to attract visitors and maximize the economic benefits of tourism,” remarked U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow. ”The fabulous new convention center hotel, the Marriott Marquis Washington, DC and CityCenterDC complex are evidence that there are many more great things to come for DC tourism. I congratulate Destination DC and thank them for their tremendous support for National Travel and Tourism Week.”

District of Columbia Public Schools to Award Seal of Biliteracy to Students at Graduation

New designation awarded to juniors and seniors who demonstrate proficiency in more than one language

D.C. Presswire, May 11, 2015 – This spring, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) will award the Seal of Biliteracy as a special recognition to students who have demonstrated proficiency in more than one language by high school graduation. The recognition of attaining biliteracy will become part of students’ high school transcript along with an official seal affixed to their diploma.

“Earning the Seal of Biliteracy is a tremendous accomplishment for our students who have demonstrated mastery in multiple languages,” said DCPS Chancellor Kaya Henderson. “We are extremely proud of their hard work and commitment to gaining multilingual and multicultural skills. These abilities are strong assets in today’s global society and will support their success throughout their entire lives.”

The DCPS Seal of Biliteracy is awarded based on guidelines drafted by The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), the National Association of Bilingual Education (NABE), the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL), and TESOL International Association. To be eligible to receive the DCPS Seal of Biliteracy, students must submit an application to their guidance counselor with completed course work and test results demonstrating cultural and communicative competency.

Nationwide, nine states and the District of Columbia award a Seal of Biliteracy. DCPS is proud to be the first in the region to recognize the unique skills of our multilingual students with this award. DCPS is committed to providing students opportunities to obtain these skills. For a third year in a row, we have committed funds to provide all DCPS elementary school students access to weekly world-language instruction. Eight DCPS schools also offer dual-language programs. To expand on these offerings, the new Brookland Middle School opening in fall 2015 will provide students with intensive arts and world-language experiences.

“We challenge our schools and communities to invest in our future leaders with opportunities for developing biliteracy or multi-literacy skills,” said Dr. Libia Gil, U.S. Department of Education assistant deputy secretary, director of the Office of English Language Acquisition. “Congratulations to DCPS for taking this challenge and making a commitment to recognize graduates with a Seal of Biliteracy for their achievements in two languages.”

DCPS high school seniors and juniors can apply for the Seal of Biliteracy by obtaining an application from their guidance counselors or by clicking here. For more information on the application process and eligibility requirements, visit the DCPS website.

Industry Continues Rise in Profile as Policy Makers and Prominent Hydrogen Technology Companies Meet to Continue Moving Forward

SANTA BARBARA, CA–(May 12, 2015) – HyperSolar, Inc. (OTCQB: HYSR), the developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and any source of water, commented today on the recent “2015 Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Policy Forum” co-hosted by the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association (FCHEA), in cooperation with the House Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Caucus.

According to the FCHEA, the event was held as part of a continuing effort by FCHEA to raise awareness of the benefits of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies to important policy-making audiences, in Washington, D.C. and around the country. Representatives from prominent hydrogen fuel technology developers including Air Liquide, Plug Power, Toyota Motor North America, and Bloom Energy attended the event, as well as the U.S. Department of Energy.

Politicians bullish on the industry drew attention to the importance of investing in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, citing potential in both commercial and industrial applications, as well as consumer-use, such as fuel cell vehicles. Congressman Charlie Dent (R-PA) said, Continued research and development will lead to greater efficiencies in production and practical applications,” while Congressman John Larson (D-CT) stated, “Fuel cells represent the best of American ingenuity and manufacturing. Along with the continued collaboration with the Department of Energy, this industry will continue to grow and support American jobs.”

The FCHEA has continues to press companies and policy makers to recognize the potential for hydrogen fuel cell adoption, previously commenting on an Executive Order from President Obama that included multiple references to advancing fuel cell technologies for federal sustainability. The agency also recently reported on the development of hydrogen fuel stations in the US, citing projects on both coasts, as well as funding announcements and hydrogen companies and automotive manufacturers around the world.

“Hydrogen fuel technologies that not too long ago represented the future of energy, are rapidly becoming more prevalent in part due to the collaboration of companies in both the public and private sectors, as well as policy makers from both sides of the aisle,” said Tim Young, CEO of HyperSolar. “As commitment grows for building the infrastructure needed to support such widespread adoption, the need for cost-efficient hydrogen produced at or near the point of distribution becomes paramount. For this reason and others, we are very optimistic regarding our technology as a viable solution to this challenge in all potential applications of use.”

HyperSolar’s technology is based on the concept of developing a low-cost, submersible hydrogen production particle that can split water molecules using sunlight without any other external systems or resources — acting as artificial photosynthesis. A video of an early proof-of-concept prototype can be viewed at http://hypersolar.com/application.php.

About HyperSolar, Inc.
HyperSolar is developing a breakthrough, low cost technology to make renewable hydrogen using sunlight and any source of water, including seawater and wastewater. Unlike hydrocarbon fuels, such as oil, coal and natural gas, where carbon dioxide and other contaminants are released into the atmosphere when used, hydrogen fuel usage produces pure water as the only byproduct. By optimizing the science of water electrolysis at the nano-level, our low cost nanoparticles mimic photosynthesis to efficiently use sunlight to separate hydrogen from water, to produce environmentally friendly renewable hydrogen. Using our low cost method to produce renewable hydrogen, we intend to enable a world of distributed hydrogen production for renewable electricity and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
